"Materials Genome Initiative "has become a global hotspot
Introduction The "Materials Genome Initiative"(MGI) has been successively launched by the US and the EU to meet the demand for high-performance new materials in emerging manufacturing industries. On August 15, at the unveiling ceremony of MSEA International Institute for Materials Genome (MSEA) in Gu'an, Hebei Province, experts announced that MGI has become a global hotspot, and the Chinese version MGI is coming out.
BEIJING, Aug 15 (Xinhua) -- The "Materials Genome Initiative "(MGI) has been successively launched by the US and the EU to meet the demand for high-performance new materials in emerging manufacturing industries. On August 15, at the unveiling ceremony of MSEA International Institute for Materials Genome (MSEA) in Gu'an, Hebei Province, experts announced that MGI has become a global hotspot, and the Chinese version MGI is coming out.
Zhiqiang Feng, the director of Thermal Energy Laboratory in University of Paris-Saclay in France, and chief scientist of MSEA, said that materials genome project is an advanced means to develop new materials, that is to say, elements selected from periodic table of elements are collocated to compose the new materials microstructure. France has rich experience and advanced technologies in materials genome project, and he expects that this field’s cooperation between China & France, even between China & Europe, could promote the development of the higher-end manufacturing industry.
The "Re-industrialization" strategy was proposed by the US to reconstruct the leading position in global manufacturing industry in 2011. One of the keys is to meet the demand for high-performance new materials in emerging manufacturing industries by MGI. AI technology is being adopted in the initiative to speed up the development of new materials. Peter Wallis, the head of the US MGI and professor of Northwestern University, once said, " It can reduce time to half for new materials developed in practical which usually takes 10 to 20 years."
Zhiqiang Feng said that the US and the EU have successively launched the MGI, using various advanced technologies, which makes the field a so-called interdiscipline. China own MGI is rapidly forming at present. MSEA plans to adopt the enterprization operation pattern, cooperating with well-known universities at home and abroad, building an international materials genome research center, thus to accelerate MGI’s research and industrialization .
In May of this year, the China National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Science and Technology approved the construction of the Beijing Huairou Comprehensive National Science Center, of which the first 5 interdisciplinary research platforms including materials genome have successfully begun construction. Shanghai and other cities are also actively promoting the layout of functional platforms in materials genome field.
According to Qingfeng Zeng, the executive dean of MSEA, MGI is based on the existing database platform, using mathematical calculation and material principle to predict the composition of a certain kind of material. Then experiments synthesis are performed to verify whether it could meet the standard or not. The materials genome can reflect the basic elements of some materials’ properties, such as atoms, molecules, electrons, ions, and their formation mechanism.
Qingfeng Zeng pointed out that this approach reverses the traditional "R & D product" process, that is, starting from the application needs, and pushing the materials back to the corresponding structural functions.。
Expert attending the unveiling ceremony illustrated that some materials research theory would take more than 30 million times experiments which takes about 1000 years on the basis of one experiment per day. However, the achievements can be achieved in few years with the use of MGI platform and advanced technology .
Qingfeng Zeng said, with the support of industrial capital like China Fortune Land Development Co., Ltd., Hebei Institute of Tsinghua University, Shaanxi Finance Holding Group, MSEA is expected to form the initial scale industrial chain by 2020. The chain mainly contains materials genome software, new energy materials, low-dimensional materials and devices, graphene, biological 3D printing and characteristic specialty hospitals, etc. Then materials genome industrial clusters valued more than 1 billion RMB will be formed.
